Our Theology of Mission
How do we understand the mission of CHFBC from God’s point of view? The term “mission” presupposes a sender, a person or group sent, and an assignment. Since Jesus is the sender and we his people are the sent ones, it’s crucial we are crystal clear about our chief assignment because this starting point will determine our mission philosophy–the values, priorities, and aim of our mission as a local church.
First, the most important and emphatic instruction for defining our mission is summarized in the five Great Commission passages: Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 13:10; 14:9; Luke 24:44-49; John 20:21; and Acts 1:8. These passages of Scripture are recorded at the end of each Gospel and at the beginning of the book of Acts trumpeting Jesus’ mandate for the church. Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Secondly, the practice of this Great Commission in the book of Acts particularly in connection with Paul’s letters reveals his traceable, repeatable, and cyclical strategy for missions. For the Apostle Paul, the Great Commission is fulfilled through planting and establishing multiplying churches (e.g. Acts 13-16)
